What to Expect on your first visit

A Warm Welcome to Gentog!

We understand that change is never easy. Transitioning your loved one into adult day care can bring a mix of emotions—both for you and for them. It’s common for participants to feel hesitant at first as they adjust to a new environment, new people, and new routines. Feelings of fear and uncertainty may arise, but rest assured, they won’t last forever. With time, your loved one will become comfortable with our staff and fellow club members, forming friendships that make Gentog feel like home.

After spending the day with us, some participants return home feeling energized and eager to share their experiences. Others may prefer a quiet evening to wind down after an engaging and social day. Every person adjusts in their own way, and we’re here to support you and your loved one through this journey.

Tips for a Smooth Transition

To help your loved one ease into their time at Gentog, we recommend the following:

Start with at least two visits per week

Routine is key to helping them feel comfortable, and it also gives you time to manage errands or enjoy a moment of self-care.

Begin with shorter visits

The first couple of visits should be around three hours, ideally starting around late morning to lunchtime. Over time, longer stays of around five hours or more tend to be successful.

Encourage conversation about their day

Speak with our staff about what activities your loved one enjoyed, and lead conversations at home with positive prompts like, “I bet singing with the children was fun today!”

Use a familiar and comfortable name for Gentog

Some families refer to us as The Club, Social Club, Senior Center, Grandma Camp, or Grandpa Daycare. Find a term that makes your loved one feel comfortable and excited to attend.

Overcoming Guilt and Embracing Support

It’s natural to experience some guilt when seeking care for a loved one—but please remember: Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Caring for someone is a shared effort, and we’re honored to be part of your support system.

If you're struggling with feelings of sadness or uncertainty, here are some ways to cope:

  • Talk with friends, family, or a counselor
  • Keep a journal or find a creative outlet
  • Join a support group
  • Pursue personal interests and hobbies—both old and new
  • Stay active—take a walk, go for a workout, or even stroll through the mall

At Gentog, we’re here for both you and your loved one. Please reach out to us with any questions or concerns—we’re happy to help make this transition as smooth and positive as possible!

Have other questions? Need additional help? Please reach out and one of our team members will be happy to help!
